I am not sure if I am feeling so lethargic due to still being sick or the low carb diet. I didn't get nearly enough done, napped, and not much else.
I wasn't as hungry today- but right now I am SO sick of chicken. Ugh. I just want a huge salad. I may not make it through the all protein phase and just go right to protein + veggies and limit carbs. I need energy for my brain to get my dissertation done, so maybe this wasn't the BEST time to try to cut carbs cold turkey.
Tomorrow I have a neuro appt. With my 6th neuro. :(
Breakfast:
2 scrambled eggs
oat bran pancake
coffee
lunch
can of tuna
1/2 chicken breast
cucumber stuff that Steph made and I didn't want it to go bad
dinner
2 chicken breasts
1/2 pancake Steph didn't eat earlier
dessert
activia yogurt + some fat free plain yogurt
And with that- bedtime!

Fitblog from June 7th
I'm still blog catchup from last week when I was sick.
Q1. What current thought keeps you from being your healthiest right now?
I feel currently like I am a failure. I'm at my highest weight. I can't seem to get on a routine. Even when I am working out and eating well, I am not losing weight. I have been to doctors and all they tell me is to keep trying, that there is nothing wrong with me. Maybe there isn't but it doesn't make me any less frustrated when just going up stairs makes me want to collapse.
Q2. What current action/habit keeps you from being your healthiest right now?
"Not having time." I am post grad student trying to finish my dissertation so I spend a lot of time doing research and writing. I also can't seem to get out of bed most days before noon. Both these things are keeping me from being on a "normal" schedule.
Q3. What do you need to change that action? How can we help?
I need to find a way to reset my sleep schedule, get myself up earlier, always have healthy options in place (or to be on some sort of plan be it Tony Ferguson, SlimFast or low carb as I seem to work better when I am on a restrictive plan- even if it is isn't 100% reasonable long term. That was how I lost 85 lbs before, and it looks like I am the kind of person who needs to be all or nothing. I guess I need assistance in figuring what plan would be best for me, and having someone to help me implement and stay on track. Having comments and people rooting for me also would help.
Q4. What one feat/challenge (big or small) will you try/do/work towards this month?
I will try to drink 100oz of water per day. That is a goal I can easily achieve.

How do you do it?
Every day I read a lot of blogs (mostly when I should be working on my dissertation) and one thing I've noticed overall is how almost all the writers are up early working out or up early working (even if they aren't working in the workplace.)
As a grad student I make my own hours, and I find it difficult to get up before noon. Getting up today at around 10:30ish was killer and required a nap later on. Even when on vacation in London when we had to get up for free breakfast (which is a real motivator in my books) we managed it twice. And that was only making sure we were up by 9:20, a feat which should be relatively easy.
Even when I was working full time and had to get up at 6ish, it was difficult and it took a lot of coffee to get me going. Don't even get me started on trying to workout before. The few times I attempted it left me red faced, sweaty and icky, and that was before dealing with the kids at school!
So, how do you do it? Is sleeping late the cause of my weight gain and inability to lose weight? Is it the wacky hours I keep? Is it eating dinner at 9pm or later? Or is it my laziness? Is it caused by being so far away from home and knowing that if I go out, when I come back I have to walk up 3 flights of stairs which makes my ankle hurt and my lungs want to collapse? Is it a side effect of all those years of meds which never worked to try to fix my headache which still hasn't gone away, or from wrecking my body with Optifast in 2006?
Am I just making excuses?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I know I am frustrated. I expected in the 2 weeks I worked out a lot to have lost at least a pound. Right? I was eating better, working out, I had more energy. So of course I gained 3 pounds.
Being sick for the past 2 weeks hasn't really helped and I've managed a handful of workouts and the 5K b/c I haven't had the energy or been able to breathe from the coughing to workout. (I've been to the doctor- they said it lasts 2-3 weeks, and there is nothing they can do, I just need rest and fluids, which I've been doing.)
I hope after my quickie trip to London this weekend I will be feeling more myself and back to working out and whatnot. Because I certainly do not want to feel this way anymore.
How do you overcome setbacks?
Are you a morning person?

Catch up Friday
I've been feeling so miserable the past few days I haven't done much of anything. I feel a tiny bit better today and finally feel hungry, so hopefully whatever this is is finally leaving my system. It also may explain why the practice 5K I did on Sunday was so miserable and I had no energy. It did help me to lose 3 pounds!
1. I did manage to go to Pilates on Tuesday which kicked my ass. That is the only formal workout I've had this week and may be the only one until Sunday. It sucks, but when I'm sick and feeling achy and miserable the last thing I want to do is exercise.
2. #Fitblog chat. Since I am in Glasgow, this means the chats are at 3am for me. I sometimes am awake, but this week, being under the weather, I was asleep. Here are my responses.
Q1) 75% give up on New Year's Resolutions within weeks. Let's discuss our goals for the second half of the year and how we plan to stick to them.
-keep going to the gym as much as I can while writing my dissertation
-don't give into temptation for take out b/c it is easier and means I don't have to do the dishes
-eat more whole grains
I plan to do this, by just DOING it, and not saying I am going to do it.
Q2) What are your goals for the rest of the year?
-lose a minimum of 20 lbs
-go to the gym/workout a minimum of 3 times/ week
-finish dissertation without losing my mind
Q3) How do you set goals?
I set goals by looking at my current habits and finding ways that I can change them positively.
Q4) What resources do you use to help you stick to your goals
Other blogs, health and fitness magazines, tracking my weight and activity and looking for trends.
3. Goals for this weekend?
-feel better, do as best as I can do on the 5K, and read for my dissertation

Sunday's workout
Today was supposed to be a practice dry run for my upcoming 5K. It was not very promising. I had got 5 minutes in my walk to the park and my hip was killing. I tried stretching and all sorts of movement to get it to feel right, and I could just not get it aligned.
Once I got to the park and began the running portion, it was not good. I managed 1.5/4 out of the running portions of week 3 day 1 of C25K. Granted I have not run outside in about a year and all the running I have been doing over the past 2-3 weeks has been on the treadmill, but I know I will be walking most of Sunday's 5K.
It will be so much easier if I can lose weight (quickly) and keep it off to run, and to do anything.
Tomorrow's workout is a pilates class and either walking or biking. I also need to start to figure out a way to get to the gym once this bus pass runs out. The bus pass costs more than the gym membership!

Total mileage today: 5.79 miles

Mind games
A lot of the reasons for my lack of success (and self esteem) is because of all of the mind games I play with myself. I still mentally see myself (sometimes) as the girl who lost 85 pounds, not the girl who lost 85 pounds and gained it all back. While this should be good for my self confidence, all it takes is a look in the mirror, or an ill fitting top to change that mind set. That and how I compare myself with others and just feel worthless and jealous, even when I do not mean to be.
I also have issues when it comes to food. I *know* I should eat well. It is a no-brainer. But that doesn't stop me from eating poorly or making bad choices. People say to say to yourself that you don't need that cookie/ice cream/sweet/etc, and to remind yourself it is a bad choice and there are healthier choices out there. And even when I remember to say that to myself, or remind myself that eating xyz is not going to help me lose weight, I STILL DO IT ANYWAYS. I still do it. Now why is that? Is that a lack of self esteem? Is it not caring? Is it being self destructive? Is it just that it tastes good, and why shouldn't I eat xyz?
I just don't know. Maybe it is a combination of all those things. Maybe I just feel worthless about my life and eating is a solution to my problems, at least temporarily- even if it isn't.
I try to remember how awesome I feel after spinning or running and keep that with me and let that inspire me to make better choices. And for some reason it doesn't. I could sit here and psychoanalyze myself until I am blue in the face. I think about how I lost weight before, and well my life situation was a lot different. I had a full time job where I could have my egg white omelette made for me every morning and a healthy salad bar to choose from every afternoon. My diet was restrictive and boring and repetitive, but it worked. I do wish I could go back to that way of eating and that mentality, but I worry that I will just end up doing the same thing I did before, which is to just go crazy after I lost the weight.
I try moderation now, but that doesn't seem to work for me. I am so all or nothing it seems.
What I do know, is that I need to be more mindful, be more aware, and think now. Otherwise.....I just don't know.

All about me
After participating in last night's #fitblog on twitter (hosted beautifully by Skinny Emmie!) I got a ton of new followers. Hopefully this will translate to new followers and commenters here! So I figured I would post an about me. If you know me, feel free to move along.
I don't know where to begin really. I was born and raised in MA, USA. Up until last September, I lived in Boston as a substitute teacher. (I'm a licensed teacher in MA, in elementary education- but there are few jobs.) I am currently living in Glasgow, Scotland getting my second Masters in education. I will be spending the summer working on my dissertation on school bullying.
I've applied to the PhD program here and am waiting on finding out if I've been accepted. If so, I will be researching bullying and its effects on upper primary grade children. If I am not accepted, I will be having a nervous breakdown figuring out what I am going to do come September.
I've always been overweight. In 1999 I started working out and eating better (and a lot less) and lost 85 pounds. I didn't keep up the healthy lifestyle for a variety of reasons and over the past 10 years have gained all the weight back.
I tried several different diets, and in 2003 I went on Optifast. I got really ill on this diet and didn't lose much weight at all (~10lbs), despite eating less than 900 calories a day and running 3 days a week. Since then I have suffered from severe daily headaches that can leave me bedridden and miserable. I have had countless tests and have seen 5 different neurologists. The diagnoses range from chronic daily headache syndrome to chronic daily migraines. Not one of the 5 doctors have had a definitive diagnosis or agreed with one another. It is frustrating, but I try to manage as best as I can.
Earlier last year I had been doing a lot better weight wise and right before I had breast reduction surgery in July. After moving to Scotland and then losing my mum earlier this year, I've managed to gain a lot of weight despite trying various diet plans and recently going back to the gym. I am assuming that this has to do with me eating my emotions and not dealing with how I am feeling over moving and losing my mum. I mostly think I really like food and eating it- I just need to re-learn how to do it in moderation and not lose control.
Right now I am trying to get back into regular workouts as I love how it makes me feel (especially spinning), but I have a hard time staying motivated when I don't see any results. (I know I shouldn't expect to see a lot of results in 2 weeks, but I had hoped to have found I hadn't *gained* even more weight.)
Questions? Comments? Fire away!

Bleurg
Bleurg. This weight loss and exercise keeps getting derailed. First, my shoulder (which still isn't back to normal), my ankle (which is starting to get better), and my never ending headaches.
My weight is up again- only a pound, but still. I have now gained 30 pounds since my surgery in July. NOT THE RIGHT WAY AROUND.
I'm trying a few things out to see if it helps. I am starting to taper off on some of my meds to see if they are affecting my weight gain. We got a stability ball and a mini trampoline that I can use at home. I downloaded some Tae Bo and I am going to try to get to a spinning class this week. I am walking more, as much as my ankle will let me- as it heals.
I would really like to be down to 200 by the end of the month- which is not likely to happen but I would like it before I go to London- to look and feel better about myself.

Weigh in #2
Starting weight: 15 stone 4
Last week: 15 stone 3
This week: 15 stone
Horray me! Even with all this stress and whatnot, and my eating not being perfect and having not made it to the gym (0r even out of bed one day) I did lose weight. I know I didn't eat all of my 49'ers this week but came close. There were some things I had no idea now many points were in, and just made sure I mentally deducted like 15 points to give myself room, etc....
I also started several new meds and stopped some other ones for my headaches (now chronic migraines, or chronic daily headache with migranious tendencies). No idea how these will affect weight loss as I only started them mid week.
That being said I am worried about being home and still being able to be on track with the crap that is always there. Granted I am sure I will be stressed and when I get THAT stressed I feel to sick to eat.
I'm leaving Glasgow to head back to Boston tomorrow morning. I am scared and stressed out of my mind. I am not ready for this. I am not ready to lose my mum. :(
(So if there are no updates, that is why. )

Weigh in #1
Today was my first weigh in. I lost 1 pound. :( I had hoped it would be more.
I am doing ok with the WW points. I ate all the weekly points, but not all of the exercise points as I was not sure if I was making 100% entries since some things weren't on the lists and I didn't always have the calorie info. Funny, after I entered my weight today, the online system told me I had one less point to eat per day now.
I feel like this will take forever, as WW has me ending up between 7-9 stone as a final weight. *sigh*
Hopefully next week will be better.
I went to the gym twice, and took a long walk, and another long walk today. We walked down Byres road, through the Arboretum, and then back up along Great Western Road and then through campus and back home.
Some pics from today's walk:

I went to the gym twice, and took a long walk, and another long walk today. We walked down Byres road, through the Arboretum, and then back up along Great Western Road and then through campus and back home.
Some pics from today's walk:

frustrating week
This weight loss thing is just not working out for me. I am trying. I am eating FAR less, walking around more. Yet, every day the scale goes up.
I know I shouldn't worry about the changes in one day but over a week......? It is just frustrating and stressful. And we are not talking tons of calories per day 1200-1600 on average which should be showing losses, small perhaps, but not a 6lb gain.
I hope this week is better than last.

Day 5
205, thank goodness, going down
Spent the entire day walking around, freezing. It was so cold and snowed on and off. Got a few things done, but not everything I had hoped. Hopefully things will keep going on a positive note. :)
We got off to a late start so I had a quick bite while out, and a cheese toasty for lunch. :)

Day 4
207 holding ugh
Stomach still a bit off, still feel dehydrated despite all of the water yesterday and today.
I wasn't very hungry most of the day, sort of picked at meals and whatnot.
Went out to get a few things at Tesco; it's an ice rink out there! It isn't safe to walk out there! And it snowed again on top of the ice- lovely. :(

Day 3
207 lbs FML
I am bloated and my stomach hurts. Obviously a result of my bad eating and no exercise. I know this. It is making the change I need to make now.
Of course here in Scotland they haven't heard of salt or sand and walking out my door is a disaster waiting to happen.
Nothing really to say about today other than I did nothing but work on my paper. I hope I have something positive to report soon.

Day 1
204.8 lbs this morning
Today was a blah day. I am not feeling well; my throat is starting to be sore and I had to go to a workshop today and I didn't sleep well at all.
My eating again was poor- I need to really get a handle on it. It's just been so hard and I don't know why it has been. Being in another country doesn't give me an excuse to eat.
I hope I am feeling better tomorrow- maybe I can go for a walk in the (expected) snow when I take a break from writing my literature review.

welcome and introduction
Hello and welcome to my new weight loss/weight issue/food blog.
About me: I'm a 35 year old grad student studying in Glasgow. I'm from the US, and am enjoying my time here. I'm getting my second masters in educational studies, and will be doing my dissertation on the prevalence of bullying in schools.
I've worked in technology and education since obtaining my B.A in 1997 and I received my M.Ed in Elementary education in 2004.
Weighty issues: I've always been overweight- from the time I was a child on (except for a short time in 2002 or s0). I struggled with my weight all my life, especially growing up. I let it rule my life. I never tried anything new. I never played sports or tried to get involved with activities because I was afraid I would be ridiculed for my weight (as I had been before).
In college I lost some and got down to about a size 11 (juniors) and thought I looked ok. After I graduated in 1997, I gained a lot of weight and got up to about 225.
I finally looked in the mirror and saw how awful I looked and felt. I started working out daily and working with a personal trainer and nuutritionist. I went from 225 to 140. I was active and happy and looked great. But it didn't last long. The moment I deviated from a strict eating (egg whites for breakfast, salad for lunch, pasta or a baked potato for dinner) and working out regimen I gained 20 lbs. I steadily gained back the weight until I got back to 211 4 years ago.
I went on a medically supervised weight loss plan called OptiFast for 3 months. The diet had me subsisting on shakes and bars- at 890 calories a day. I was running 3 miles per day several times a week. I lost about 11 pounds in 3 months. That is usually what people on the plan were losing per week. During that time I nearly collapsed several times due to low blood sugar and blood pressure (getting as low as 60/45). After that happened while I was at work I stopped. I had to.
Since then I have fluctuated from 184-200, and am currently at 204. Since then I have been suffering from chronic daily headaches, where the pain sometimes causes me to be unable to get out of bed. I've seen 4 neurologists, 3 primary care doctors, and countless ER docs. I've had every test under the sun done, a spinal tap, CAT scan, and an MRI. I've tried all sorts of medication, pain killers, and nerve blocks.
This has made it hard to lose weight, especially on days where the pain makes me want to vomit and hide under the duvet. I did go through a period last summer, where I got back to the gym and was feeling better. This summer, in order to try and alleviate the headaches and backpain, I underwent a breast reduction, going from 42DD to 38C. It's been helpful somewhat, but I have not worked out since, and my eating since moving to Scotland has been out of control. I've been eating shortbread and scones and crumpets like they are going out of style.
I need to get back to working out and eating well (not restrictively) and healthy. I want to get back to spinning and running like I used to be able to.

Long time update
It's been a while since I have updated. Whoa.
I'm still in the 180's. I was 188 the other day; the lowest I have seen was 186.
I am fitting in a 10-12. My clothes are definitely fitting better. I had a top on today that usually gapes, and did not.
I have been working out more, walking and finally getting back to the gym.
Sunday: 32 mins on the treadmill as part of the couch to 5K plan and then another half hour or so on the cybex
Monday: Walked in and out of Coolidge corner, about 3-4 miles of walking
Tuesday: 40 mins on the elliptical [would have been longer, but time was short today]
I'm trying to eat less, get more protein and fiber. Some days are better than others. Working has kept me busy and I think that has a lot to do why I have been able to lose some weight. Also more coffee LOL.
I hope to be able to keep this up and lose more weight by the end of the school year. I would be happy to get to 180 by then, since I lose weight so slowly with the PCOS and the headaches and whatnot. I will take what I can get.
EDIT: Also when I was at work on Saturday I was asked how much I weigh- over 200? I said no, and the kid was like what 199? I joked it off but I was kind of ticked off. *sigh*

A long overdue update
Wow. It has been well over a month since I have updated here. That shows where my mindset has been. It has not been on weight loss or fitness. It's been on pain, exhaustion and feeling like utter crap, to be perfectly honest. I have been ridiculously depressed since TEOT. I have been in a lot of pain. I have been just flat out exhausted, where all I want to do is sleep, sleep, sleep. I haven't gained any weight, nor have I lost any. When I was at the doctor I was still at 191. I haven't weighed myself since with the fact I've had my period and issues with my digestive system courtesy of narcotics. [YES TMI KNOW] But I am not weighing myself until both of those things have been rectified. LOL.
This week I am on vacation. Today I woke up at 7 am, wide awake and ready to go. It's probably the first time I've woken up and felt "good" in sometime. [of course right now I feel like crap] I got up and had breakfast and headed out to get more protein powder. I then went to to the chiro and then *gasp*, the gym. It's been a while since I have had a good, hard workout, so I actually got there in time for a Pilates class, which I thought was a good way to get back into it. It wasn't a "killer" workout. However, it let me stretch out after the adjustment and it felt good. It was also taught by my favorite instructor, so it was a win/win. I soaked in the hot tub after. I had thought about working out more after the hour class, since I hadn't burned a ton of cals, but while I was waiting for my smoothie, I could feel my legs twitching, and I was glad I stopped when I did. I don't want to burn myself out before I get started again.
So this week my goals are to work out at least 4 times and eat well, or better than I have. Since the pain has been *slightly* less, I hope I can make though this week ok. I have .5 of a pill left so I need to see my new neuro ASAP. I will be calling them hourly until I get what I want. LOL.
I will be trying to update here every day from now on again.

NSV!
I had a non scale victory this morning. I was looking for something to wear today and also pulling clothes for taking to a consignment shop. I grabbed a pair of pants my roommate had given me about 2 years ago. They are from the Limited, and are super skinny pants, and are a size 12. They fit. I was so happy. I wish the ones from AE she gave me fit, which are also a 12 but I can't even get them over my thighs, and my thighs aren't super huge either. It's usually my hips that cause the issues LOL. I wanted to wear a skirt today, so I've saved them for next week. Go me :)
